Early November a couple years ago, after the first snows had coated the rocky landscape above the tree line, I found myself in the Swiss Alps hoping for one last adventure before heading home. I had scouted this location on google earth and hoped to photograph a sunrise from this mountain. However, the road leading up the nearest pass was already closed for the season and mostly covered with snow. On top of that I only had trail runners and no micro-spikes, ice axe, or trekking poles. I spent nearly the entire day gaining 5,000 feet of elevation on road, trail, and finally a thousand foot scramble to the summit. By now my feet were close to frostbite and the cold was reaching my core. I quickly got my tent set up, put some dry clothes on, placed hand warmers in my socks, and settled into my tent for the night. Waking up to this view in the crisp morning air with the vast Bernese Alps spread out all around made the climb and the cold all worth it.
