The longest glacier in the Alps is the Aletsch Glacier in Switzerland. Most of the year there is a gondola which will take you to the summit of a peak called Eggishorn overlooking the glacier spread out for miles in every direction. However, for a brief pause between summer hiking season and winter ski season, the gondola stops 2,500 feet of elevation below the summit. So I had to sprint to make it for sunset, summiting just before the light disappeared. However, a cold bivvy overnight revealed that sunrise was the real magic I had come for. In that blue hour before the sun rose, alpen glow brightened the highest peaks. The Matterhorn peaks out to the far left while the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mark the source of the Aletsch Glacier on the right.
