Colorado's San Juans are legendary and often cited as people's favorite mountain range in the state. One of the great things about this range is just now much variety there is in the geology and topography of the mountain landscapes here. Wetterhorn is a 14er in a section of the San Juans that has fewer lakes and summits than say the Weminuche Wilderness. Instead it has wide open basins like this, the Wetterhorn Basin, which if you time it just right will be covered in wildflowers. The bloom was a bit late this particular year which was perfect as I didn't make it here until early August. Spread out before me was an ocean of gently waving wildlfowers of all different varietys but dominated by the multicolored beauties captured in this image. Further down the basin, nestled in the sparse treeline, were a couple of tents making me wish that I was spending the night in this quiet basin rather than hiking back out to my car in the dark.
